Three occupants of cab killed in accident

SMASHED: The taxi that rammed a stationary lorry on GST Road at Pallavaram on Friday.

CHENNAI: Three occupants of a cab were killed on the spot and one was injured when the speeding car rammed a stationary lorry parked on the edge of Grand Southern Trunk Road at Pallavaram in the early hours on Friday.

According to Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation), S.Veeramani and K.Vijaykumar, both aged 25, were drivers with a travel agency at Mylapore. They had reportedly dropped a passenger at the Chennai airport around 12.45 a.m. Police said it was still not established from where they had picked up the passenger as the travel agency’s owner was not aware of the trip.

According to police, on their way back from the airport the drivers picked up two men – Chandrasekar (22) and S.Rajasekar (25).

Chandrasekar is an employee of a private firm involved in construction activity at the airport and had missed the last train to Pallavaram, where he was staying. He took a ride in the car and agreed to pay Rs.10 for the trip. Rajasekar belonged to Athur in Salem district and was returning home after seeing off a passenger at the airport. He wanted to reach Tambaram to a board a bus to Salem and had paid Rs.25 to the drivers. Traffic police said Veeramani was driving the vehicle at a high speed on the extreme left side of the road. The car rammed the stationary lorry near a tea stall. Police said they received information at 1 a.m. When they reached the spot, they found the car completely entangled underneath the lorry’s chassis.

They pulled Chandrasekar out of the car and rushed him to Government General Hospital. Police said he was out of danger. Veeramani, Vijaykumar and Rajasekar died on the spot. Police said they struggled for over an hour to remove the car and the bodies, which were taken to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital for post-mortem. Veeramani belonged to Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district and Vijaykumar hailed from Perambalur district.
