A realistic take on the making of a criminal

Film: Barah Aana

Star cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz

Direction: Raja Menon

The biggest casualty, as the chasm between the haves and have nots deepens, is human dignity. The way the self-respect of the people who serve us is skinned in day-to-day life, it doesn’t take much for a man to become a beast. This is what Raja Menon tries to suggest in this realistic take on the making of a criminal. Raja tracks the life of three men, a driver, a waiter and a watchman, who are robbed off their self-esteem by their masters and circumstances.

His basic story is not much different from the masala flick of the ‘70s when the hero used to take the law in his own hands to avenge the ill-treatment meted out by the zamindar or money lender.

Here Raja has shorn all the masala off the premise and has put the authentic soul in a credible setting.

Watchable!

A.K.
