FIA agrees to defer rule change

LONDON: Formula One’s ruling body (FIA) says it may put off new points system for the sport until next season following the teams’ objections to the system.

The Formula One Teams’ Association said on Friday that FIA’s ruling this week that the championship will go to the driver with the most race wins rather than the highest total points was invalid.

FIA now says it is prepared to defer the change until the 2010 season.

The change has met with criticism from drivers including world champion Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

This year’s season starts March 29 with the Australian Grand Prix. — AP
