Show-cause notices to 70 Probe ordered into repetition of names on list BELLARY: Criminal cases have been filed against 30 persons for submitting applications seeking inclusion of name in the voters’ list despite being already enrolled. Deputy Commissioner B. Shivappa, in a press release here on Saturday, said that in addition, show-cause notices had been served on 70 persons asking why criminal cases should not be booked against them for furnishing wrong information. Such action comes in the wake of instructions given by Chief Electoral Officer M.N. Vidyashankar seeking a detailed inquiry into the repetition of names on voters’ lists. Mr. Vidyashankar had expressed concern over the high number of applications being received from people seeking enrolment of name. He said that in Bellary city alone, 27,700 fresh applications had been received, which was the highest in the State, while the number of applications received in a place like Bangalore was only 4,700. He conducted a special review meeting on Thursday to verify the reasons for the increase and instructed officials to initiate stern action against fraudsters. Mr. Vidyashankar had told presspersons that of the 16,000-odd applications disposed of, 11,000 were rejected on various grounds such as incomplete information and wrong address.
