Congress observes Women’s Day

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Even as the State Congress leaders and others are camping in Davangere to receive party president Sonia Gandhi, who is scheduled to launch the election campaign, a section of the women’s wing of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee observed the International Women’s Day here on Saturday.

The very meeting of the women’s wing on the eve of the party’s national leader arriving in the State assumed importance in the light of disunity in the party besides complaints that women were being sidelined. But the meeting turned out to be a routine affair. Even the speeches by senior women leaders such as the women’s wing president and former Minister, Rani Satish, were confined to the role of women in overall development of society.

The selection of venue for holding the meeting at a far off place instead of the party’s head office in the heart of the city came as a surprise to many.
