Strike a balance between sports and academics, students told

Taking part in sports teaches you to handle failure: Raman

PUDUKOTTAI: “Two cricketers from Tamil Nadu have captained the country (S. Venkatraghavan and K. Srikkanth). And both of them are engineers,” no sooner did former Test cricketer W.V. Raman said this, the students of Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology broke into a thunderous applause.

Mr. Raman, who was the chief guest for the first annual Sports Day of the college here on Saturday, said that students should strike a balance between sports and academics. “Sports play an important role in building character. It teaches you to handle failure. Taking part in sports activities is the best way to stay fit,” the Tamil Nadu coach added.

Mr. Raman, who represented the country in 11 Test Matches and 27 One Day Internationals, also participated in an interactive session and answered queries raised by students.

Principal A. Naveen Sait said that the college management had been encouraging students to take part in sports events at various levels.

Red House was adjudged the overall champions. A. Ramkumar of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department and U. Rajeswari of Electronics and Communication Engineering department were declared individual champions in the men’s and women’s sections respectively. Mr. Raman gave away the prizes in the presence of college chairman R. Vairavan.
