Cameras at white tiger enclosure

P. Oppili

They can record for 48 hours

Recorder purchased at a cost of nearly Rs. 40,000

Anusuya is expected to give birth in a few days

CHENNAI: Officials at the Vandalur zoo have installed two cameras at the service area of the white tiger enclosure on Thursday.

The zoo authorities said that a female tiger, Anusuya, is pregnant and is expected to give birth in a few days.

The cameras are put up to monitor the delivery and ascertain the number of cubs. A monitor has also been installed near the enclosure for the animal keeper to keep a watch on the tigress, they said. The cameras of the digital video recorder can record non-stop for about 48 hours. The animal will not be allowed to go out of the enclosure once it delivers the cubs, said a zoo officer. The recorder has been purchased at a cost of nearly Rs. 40,000.

“It is for the first time a camera has been fixed to monitor the delivery of cubs,” a senior officer added. The white tiger pair was obtained from the National Zoo, New Delhi, a couple of years ago.
