“Architecture still provides great job opportunities”

CHENNAI: Professions such as architecture will provide employment opportunities even at the time of collapse of economy, said M.D.V. Kalyani Annie, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, here on Saturday.

Participating in the 5th graduation ceremony of the MEASI Academy of Architecture, she said recession led to cut in jobs. However, the architecture profession still provided great opportunities. Historically architecture is considered the mother of all arts, she said.

Lauding the efforts taken by the organisation, she said students from the academy were exposed to rural architecture as well as the heritage buildings in the State. This would help the students very well.

With the increase in the mean level temperature world over, the architects have a vital role to play.

They could attempt to create green buildings using plants, she said. Students should uphold the ethical and social values besides the dignity of the institution.

The quality of education in southern India was better than in other States in the country, said R. Krishnamoorthy, president, Madras Bar Association and former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu.

Of the total engineering colleges in the country, nearly one third of them are in south India, he observed.

N.Altaf Ahmed, Director of the Academy, said it was started with 18 students and now has 376 students. This year 40 students got their degrees of which 29 had obtained first class, he added.
