Letters to the Editor
Politicians cross all limits of propriety deliberately. Knowing that their acts constitute a violation of the model code of conduct, they make inflammatory speeches and distribute money and articles to voters. When the media expose them, they claim that they have been misquoted or their photograph is doctored. They take pains to tour their constituencies asking for votes. Once elected, they hardly bother to meet the voters. K. Bhaskara Rao, Hyderabad The middle classes are constantly berated by both the media and politicians for their reluctance to enter politics. The elite do nothing but sit in the comfort of their drawing rooms and indulge in their favourite pastime of politician bashing. We complain that people with criminal records are given the party ticket and that we are faced with the Hobson’s choice. At last we have people like Mallika Sarabhai and Shashi Tharoor contesting the election but we find the media and politicians questioning their intentions, wondering whether they have a hidden agenda and casting doubts on their ability to win, instead of encouraging them. We are so steeped in cynicism that we cannot believe that one can want to contest elections for reasons other than acquiring power to advance one’s own interests. Sudha Krishnaswamy, Chennai
