Seminar to discuss impact of colonial policies

It will explore zones of conflict and collective action of diverse social groups in colonial and post-colonial India


PUDUCHERRY: The Department of History of Pondicherry University is organising a national seminar on “Dominance and resistance in colonial and post-colonial India” on Monday and Tuesday.

According to a release, the impact of colonial policies, transformations in social, economic, political and cultural realms, peasant resistance against dominance of land-owning classes and colonial State, tribal revolts, working class movements against capitalist exploitation and anti-caste movements interrogating the established forms of dominance and seeking social justice and equality would be some of the themes of deliberations and discussion.

The seminar would explore multiple zones of conflict and collective action of diverse social groups in colonial and post-colonial India. It would debate the Indian experience in the context of new perspectives on the formation of identities and resistance against multiple forms of oppression, and focus on the issues that were of relevance to the perception of resistance movements in contemporary India.

Historian and Chairperson of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, Mridula Mukherjee and historian at the Centre of Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Aditya Mukherjee would take part in the seminar. Scholars from across the country including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would take part in the seminar, the release said.
