Fasting Congress MLA leaves for Hyderabad

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: After hectic parleys with the Congress high command, fasting Gurazala MLA Janga Krishna Murthy left for Hyderabad on Sunday to hold talks with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajaskhara Reddy and MP K.V.P Ramachandra Rao in his final bid to wrest back his candidature for the assembly segment. The AICC has already finalised the candidature of Guntur-based paediatrician Alla Venkateswarulu.

Mr. Krishna Murthy who has been on an indefinite fast in front of the District Congress Party office for the last three days relented after talking with the Chief Minister over the telephone and latter assuring that ‘justice would be done.’ This comes close on the heels of his supporters holding talks with Mr. Ramachandra Rao in Hyderabad and urging them to nominate Mr. Krishna Murthy again. The leaders also warned of severe repercussions if the seat was denied to Mr. Krishna Murthy and warned that the ‘non-local sentiment’ could work against the party and peace would be disturbed the faction-ridden villages of Palnadu.

District Congress Committee president Singam Basavapunnaih and PCC secretary Vanukuri Srinivasa Reddy came to the party office in the evening and urged him to call off the fast and proceed to Hyderabad.

Dramatic scenes

Earlier in the day, dramatic scenes were witnessed at the party office when two supporters of Mr. Krishna Murthy tried to self-immolate themselves by pouring kerosene.

In Vinukonda, over 1,000 supporters of sitting MLA Makkena Mallikarjuna Rao left for Hyderabad in a last ditch effort to convince the party bosses to nominate Mr. Rao. They also warned that they would never allow an ‘outsider’ to file his nomination in the constituency.
