CHENNAI: A two-day workshop on colposcopy was inaugurated on Saturday at the Chennai Port Trust Hospital here. It will provide hands-on training to participating gynaecologists and obstetricians.

Colposcopy, a gold standard test for cervical cancer in the United States, is used to check abnormal areas in the cervix. Though pap smear is an effective screening measure, confirmation of the biopsy results can be done using a Colposcope, said Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor K. Meer Mustafa Hussain, at the inauguration of the workshop. Vaccinating girls aged 9 to 26 years would, to a certain extent, prevent cancer of the cervix, he said. It is important to encourage women to increase the consumption of vegetables.

The hospital has been conducting cervical cancer screening programme since October 2006, said K. Suresh, Chairman of Chennai Port Trust.
