CHENNAI: Police arrested three men on charges of cheating and impersonation here on Sunday. According to police, three accused, Gandhi, Muthusamy and Venkatasubramaniam, had posed as Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officers and threatened a village administrative officer (VAO) in Salem district and told him that he was involved in several bribery cases. They further said that the cases would be closed if he paid them Rs. 50,000. Suspecting foul play, the VAO made a complaint to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) office in Salem, which directed him to inform the Chennai office also. When the impostor, Gandhi, called the next time, the VAO promised to pay up. They arranged to meet on Greenways Road. When the impostors arrived on Saturday, they were caught red-handed by a team of police lead by Deputy Superintendent of Police Ponnusamy. The accused were handed over to Pattinapakkam police. Interrogation of the accused revealed that Gandhi was a resident of Dooming Kuppam in Mylapore. Muthusamy was a clerk with an advocate and Venkatasubramaniam is a quality control manager in a private company. Police said that Gandhi was involved in a similar cheating case registered at Senthamangalam police station in Salem in 2006. Gandhi had told the police that he was an advocate and had been debarred from practising following the case in 2006. Police said that they were yet to verify his claim.
