Several areas go without power

Supply was partially restored only by evening

BESCOM officials say power shutdown was due to maintenance work

‘I tried to enquire with BESCOM Control Room but there was no response’

Bangalore: Several areas in the city went without power for a large part of Sunday. Power supply was partially restored in most of the areas only by evening.

While Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) officials stated that power shutdown was due to maintenance work taken up in several areas, residents complained that the officials were not responding to their pleas.

A resident from Nandini Layout told The Hindu that power went off at around 10 a.m.

“I tried to contact BESCOM engineers several times but it was of no avail. There was no response even from the utility’s control room.”

Ganesh Athreya, a resident of RMV second stage, said that power supply was erratic in the afternoon.

“Voltage was also poor and due to the sudden power cuts, my electronic gadget and three bulbs fused out,” he said.

A resident from Girinagar also complained about voltage fluctuations.

Lack of response

“Just to be on the safer side, I switched off all electronic gadgets. I even ensured that none of the gadgets were plugged to the sockets. I tried to enquire with the jurisdictional BESCOM office, but there was no response,” she said.

When contacted, officials at the BESCOM Control Room attributed the power cuts to maintenance work taken up at a few stations in the city.

“Most of the work was completed by around 6 p.m. and power supply was restored in the affected areas,” he said.

Asked about complaints from residents about the lack of response at the control room, the official said that several phone lines were down following the underpass construction at Maharani’s College junction.

“Services of only a few lines have been restored,” the official added.
