Election Watch against fielding of criminals

HYDERABAD: The AP National Election Watch has demanded all political parties not to field candidates who are facing criminal charges.

At a press conference here on Monday, former Chief Secretary K. Madhav Rao and eminent lawyer Padmanabha Reddy, who are members of the Election Watch Committee, said an analysis of data collected from across the State showed 10 of the 60 sitting MPs and 60 of the 294 MLAs face criminal charges. The MPs and MLAs were from all parties. The criminal charges include murder, attempt to murder, rioting and poll violation-related offences, they stated.

Criminal cases were also registered against the kith and kin of MPs and MLAs. Good governance could only be provided by legislators who have an excellent, non-criminal back ground. As such parties owe it to the citizens to field good candidates with non-criminal background, they added.
