HYDERABAD: A low-cost internet access device, @box, developed by city-based iChip will be available commercially soon.
Addressing a press conference here, CEO of iChip Kota Bhaskar said that the device, showcased at Las Vegas, was powered by BSNL broadband internet. The company tied up with BSNL for the supply of five lakh @box devices in FY10. He said that the @box could be connected to a TV and a key board and trackball as user interface, which could enable users with a full complement of a computer. As part of the agreement with the BSNL, the device would be sold at Rs 2,500 and technical trials were completed by the BSNL on the product. Mr. Bhaskar said that iChip was also talking to other telecom companies providing internet services for tie-ups. The company outsourced manufacturing to a local company for the domestic market and a Chinese company for the world market.
iChip had invested three million dollars to develop the @box and is expecting to net US $ 80-90 million in the first year. Mr. Bhaskar said that the company was also planning to upgrade the technology soon and proposed to export to the US and other markets also.
