COIMBATORE: The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile will be inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2012, BrahMos Aerospace Chief Executive Officer A. Sivathanu Pillai told presspersons here on Sunday. The missile was first provided to the Navy and then to the Army after the successful test of the surface-to-surface version. Efforts were on make some modifications to suit the requirements of the Indian Air Force. The missile would be loaded onto the Sukhoi 30 aircraft, he said. On the failure of the first surface-to-surface test, Mr. Pillai said it could not be called a failure. During a test, it was possible that a missile might not find the target. It provided an opportunity to understand the problem and correct it. This Block II BrahMos missile programme was complicated because the country had to depend on others for GPS (global positioning system) satellites. Mr. Pillai said that other countries might have begun efforts to develop a supersonic missile after India had developed the BrahMos. Therefore, the next focus for the country was on developing a hypersonic one.
