It’s back to school for political parties
Meena Menon
Political parties are hugely relieved that they can now use school and college grounds for political meetings, with certain conditions of course. The Election Commission of India on March 18 in response to several petitions complaining about scarcity of grounds for campaigning has relented on its earlier stand.
It has allowed the use of school and college grounds provided the academic calendar is not disturbed and the management has no objection and prior permission for such campaigning is obtained from the them as well as the sub divisional officer.
However, no party is allowed to monopolise the use of these grounds and any violation will be viewed seriously by the Commission. In addition the grounds have to be returned to the concerned authority without any damage or with the requisite compensation for the damage caused. All States and Union Territories can now allow the use of educational campuses except Punjab and Haryana where there is a court order expressly forbidding the use of school grounds for campaigning during elections.
