ALAPPUZHA: The Federal Bank ATM at Convent Square here was looted on Saturday with burglars making away with Rs.11 lakh. Bank officials came to know about the theft only on Monday, two days after the incident. The burglary is suspected to be an inside job since the ATM was not damaged, police sources said. The burglars reportedly used the 12-digit code number and the key to open the machine and made away with the cash tray containing Rs.11 lakh. The incident is suspected to have occurred on Saturday, between 1.30 p.m. and 1.45 p.m., after a team had arrived to load cash into the machine and the security guard was away for lunch, reportedly entrusting the ATM with the team. Federal Bank officials declined to comment, while officials of the agency, to which the task of loading cash was outsourced, were not available. Police sources said it was the agency that reported the incident on Monday. The security guard at the ATM said the machine was defunct and no cash transactions were possible from Saturday afternoon. Assuming that it was a technical defect, the officials were informed and a team arrived on Monday to repair the machine and reload it with cash. It was then that the missing cash tray was noticed. The case is still under investigation, police sources said.
