For empowerment: A section of the audience at a Women’s Day programme in Hassan on Tuesday. HASSAN: Pushpa Kenchappa, advocate, has said it was 12th century reformer Basaveshwara who had fought for women’s equality, but sadly even today, they were being exploited. Addressing a gathering at a Women’s Day celebration programme here on Tuesday, Ms. Kenchappa said equality for women was still to become a reality, and added that very few women had arrived in their fields. It was in 1933 that daughters were entitled for property rights if parents had no male issue. If a man died, the widow was to get his property (if he had no children) and when she died, the property would go to her in-laws. Now, women were entitled to equal rights in sharing ancestral property. Ms. Kenchappa felt that even to this day, women were deprived of their share of property owing to their ignorance of the law and also lack of education. She advised women to be aware of their rights and give education to girls. President of the Hassan branch of the IMA Rangalakshmi advised women to take care of their health particularly during middle age. City Municipal Council president Ratnamma Mahantesh inaugurated the celebrations. All-India Radio Programme coordinator Ushalatha, Gynaecology and Obstetrics Association district president Hemalatha Pattabhi and social worker Munira Begum also spoke.
