DEHRA DUN: Harish Rawat, former president of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee, was on Tuesday declared the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha seat from Hardwar. The announcement was made here by the party spokesman, Surendra Singh Arya. The party would decide on the candidate from Naini Tal soon, he added. A former Member of Parliament from Almora, Mr. Rawat faces stiff opposition from within the party as his differences with the present UPCC president Yashpal Arya are well known. He is pitted against Swami Yatindranand Giri of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mohammad Shahajad of the Bahujan Samaj Party, and Ambrish Kumar of the Samajwadi Party. The seat was won in the last Lok Sabha elections by Rajendra Singh Badi of the Samajwadi Party, which however drew a blank in the last Uttarakhand Assembly elections. The constituency now presents new challenges for the candidates with the addition of three Assembly segments–Rishikesh, Doiwala and Dharampur in Dehra Dun district—after delimitation. With this, the earlier purely plains seat has become a mix of both the plains and the hills. The culture of the people of the plains and the hills is different and so are their priorities and the politicians will have to put in extra efforts to win over the electorate.
