“Prasanna has fused schools of music”

CHENNAI: Guitarist R. Prasanna’s composition for ‘Smile Pinki,’ a documentary film that won an Oscar this year, was a heartening indication of India’s growing potential in the field of film music, speakers at a function organised here on Monday to felicitate the musician said.
Clippings from the documentary were screened and Prasanna played a Carnatic composition and one from his album ‘Bowling for peace’ at the event. Veteran music composer M. S.Viswanathan, producer A. V. M. Saravanan and director S. P. Muthuraman felicitated the guitarist for taking Indian music to the global stage. Mr. Muthuraman said that the guitarist bridged the Western and Indian music by belting out melodic fusions and introducing innovativeness in both schools of music.
Mr. Viswanathan said every award won by young musicians would make him proud.
He expressed optimism that the Indian film music industry would reach greater heights.
Mr. Saravanan observed that Mr. Viswanathan has been an inspiration for upcoming musicians and his compositions were an exemplar of quality music, which were serving as musical guides for younger musicians.
Accepting the felicitations, Mr. Prasanna said the humanitarian approach in ‘Smile Pinki’ touched hearts of millions and the background score, composed in a short duration, was aimed at enhancing the beautifully narrated script. “
