Educate prisoners on human rights provisions, jail staff told

Chairman of State Human Rights Commission visits Hindalga prison



PRISONERS RIGHTS: Chairman of State Human Rights Commission S.R. Nayak interacting with prisoners and staff during his visit to Hindalga Central Jail on Wednesday.

Belgaum: The Chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, S.R. Nayak, has advised the official staff of the Hindalga Central Jail here to provide all the necessary information related to Human Rights Commission and procedures involved to seek relief in the event of any harassment or violation of human rights.

The prisoners suffering from health problems should get necessary medicines on time, he said.

He even warned the jail staff of initiating action if the jail authorities failed to educate jail inmates on the various human rights provisions.

Interaction

He was interacting with the jail authorities after inspecting various facilities, including kitchen, handloom workshop and meditation centre, and listening to the grievances of the prisoners here on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner J. Ravishankar, Superintendent of Police Sonia Narang and Jail Superintendent D.B. Kadli were present.

Mr. Nayak, however, expressed satisfaction over the welfare programmes and remarked that cleanliness maintained at Hindalga Jail was much better when compared to many other jails in the State.

He was also impressed with the adult education and self-employment opportunities provided within the jail premises.

He advised the prisoners to lead a truthful and respectful life after serving their jail term.
