Battle of veterans in Bapatla

P. Samuel Jonathan

BAPATLA: Two veteran politicians are set to lock themselves in the battle of ballot in Bapatla Assembly constituency. Veteran Congress MLA Gade Venkata Reddy is seeking a record successive term and might find himself pitted against friend-turned-foe, Chirala Govardhana Reddy, who has recently joined the TDP after quitting the Congress.

The other contenders for TDP ticket were former Union minister Ummareddy Venkateswarulu and his son Venkata Ranama.

The PRP is yet to confirm its candidate though the name of Katti Padma Rao is doing the rounds. Kona Raghupati, who had failed to get Congress ticket, is all set to contest as an independent.

The constituency is compact and comprises Bapatla town, rural, Pittalavanipalem and Karlapalem mandals. The voters are a fair mix of dalits, dalit Christians, reddy and backward classes. The Congress could look to gain from the traditional vote bank of dalits, Muslims and Reddy voters, while the TDP is banking on Kamma and the BCs.

The PRP will look to consolidate its hold on Kapu votes and seek support from other castes too.

For a town which has been endowed with top notch institutes offering professional courses like engineering, agriculture, agricultural engineering, pharmacy and home science and gifted with popular sea resorts, the lack of development has been the bane. For a town which has produced some of the political stalwarts like, Kona Prabhakara Rao, who held important portfolios in Congress governments and Ummareddy Venkateswarulu, the lack of basic amenities like piped drinking water supply, underground drainage and proper road connectivity, has been startling.

Mr. Gade Venkata Reddy migrated from his home turf of Parchur constituency.
