YSR optimistic on Pranahita-Chevella water project

CHEVELLA: Sticking to his sentimental attachment for this bustling town close to the Andhra Pradesh capital, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy launched his party’s election campaign even as the skies opened up, bringing cheer to the Congress cadres on Wednesday.

Accompanied by ‘Chevella Chellemma’ P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and APCC president D. Srinivas and Lok Sabha candidate S. Jaipal Reddy and others, the Chief Minister formally got into the election mode two hours behind schedule at 1 p.m. by addressing a moderate gathering here, about 40 km from Hyderabad. It was here in 2004 that Dr. Reddy had launched his election campaign. On Wednesday, Chevella wore a festive look with party flags, buntings and flex boards put up everywhere on the eve of the Congress Jaitra Yatra.

In less than 40 minutes, the sweltering heat condition eased as the sky became overcast and ended in downpour. When Dr. Reddy arrived at the open stadium ground, people were seen sweating. But as he began speaking, strong winds which almost uprooted the huge flex board in the background of the dais gave way to rain,

Dr. Reddy, wearing his trademark dhoti and kurta with a towel tied to his head, launched a scathing attack on the opposition parties. Advising people to be wary of freebies, he said: “See our credibility and give us one more chance to continue the programmes.”

He said: “Once the ambitious Rs. 38,500-crore Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project is completed in four years, the up-land areas of Ranga Reddy will compete with Godavari delta.”

Programmes stay

The APCC president said none of the ongoing programmes would be discontinued. Mr. Jaipal Reddy termed Chevella as Dr. Reddy’s ‘Dharmabhoomi’ and his ‘Karmabhoomi.’
