Vivek in last eight

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: Unseeded Vivek Shokeen stormed into the quarterfinals upsetting seventh-seeded Sheeva Prabhu of the U.S. in the Oil India ITF men’ futures tennis tournament here on Wednesday.

In the pre-quarterfinals, Shokeen ended the hopes of his U.S.-based Indian opponent 6-4, 6-4 with a fine combination of skill and aggression.Shokeen was joined in the next round by eighth-seeded Vishnu Vardhan, who defeated Vinod Sridhar to pick up a quarterfinal meeting against fourth-seeded Patrick Taubert of Germany.

Shokeen plays third-seeded Hsin-Han Lee of Chinese Taipei in the last-eight stage.

The greater part of the Indian participation evaporated with fifth-seeded Divij Sharan leading the list of unsuccessful candidates. Struggling with erratic form Sharan was shown the door by qualifier Jared Drucker of the U.S. Unseeded Rohan Gajjar, V.M. Ranjeet, Abhijeet Tiwari and Vinod Sridhar were the other Indians to fall by the wayside.

Lost chance

Rohan Gajjar had the opportunity of producing another upset of the day as he won the first set against fourth-seeded Taubert. The Indian made too many errors in the second set allowing his German opponent to make a successful comeback in the match.

The results (Indians unless stated): Men’s singles (pre-quarterfinals): Benjamin Ballert (Mon) bt Huai-En Chang (Tpe) 6-2, 6-4; Jared Drucker (USA) bt Divij Sharan 6-3, 7-6(4); Patrick Taubert (Ger) bt Rohan Gajjar 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Vishnu Vardhan bt Vinod Sridhar 6-4, 6-4; Vivek Shokeen bt Sheeva Prabhu (USA) 6-4, 6-4; Hsin-Han Lee (Tpe) bt Niall Angus (GBr) 6-2, 7-5; Kyu-Yong Lim (Kor) bt V.M. Ranjeet 6-4, 6-0; Adam Kellner (Hun) bt Abhijeet Tiwari 6-3, 6-4.
