BANGALORE: Continental India, a subsidiary of the Germany headquartered automotive components supplier, which has invested Rs. 150 crore annually since 2006 in its India operations, has opened a technical centre here.

It will initially have 600 engineering staff with plans for a 20-per cent increase every year.

Continental had worldwide revenues of euro 25 billion last year, of which euro 15 billion were from automotive equipment.Continental India Managing Director Markus Distelhoff told reporters here that the work at the Bangalore centre would cover development and testing of engine management systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, digital tachographs designed for public transport, testing of energy management software for electric and hybrid vehicles and software for electronic braking systems.

“The technical centre India will develop software to connect mobile phones with car audio systems and to stream media from the phone to the car.

“In addition to high-end jobs we are also keen on equipment for low priced vehicles like the Nano for which we are making fuel supply systems,” Mr. Distelhof said.

Head of the technical centre Gunner Juergens said the centre had ongoing partnership with Siemens Information Systems, KPIT Cummins and Wipro.

This had resulted in developing multiple automotive engineering projects for global customers of Continental. One focus area now would be new products for automotive manufacturers in emerging markets.
