NEW DELHI: Following the failure of their pre-poll alliance with the Congress in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh have decided to come together and campaign for each other. As of now both parties are part of the United Progressive Alliance. “There is a likelihood of Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh coming together. We want Ram Vilas Paswan [of the Lok Jan Shakti Party] also to come on board,” Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh told journalists here on Wednesday. He made these remarks after a telephonic talk with Mr. Prasad. Even if the Samajwadi Party fielded candidates for a few seats in Bihar, Mr. Prasad said he would canvass for Mr. Mulayam Singh, according to Mr. Amar Singh. “The politics to finish Mulayam Singh off in the Hindi heartland will not succeed. The secular brigade of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will remain intact,” he said. To a question on the Congress poll prospects in U.P. under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr. Amar Singh said he was not convinced by the confidence expressed by the party. “It is their perception and observation. It should’ve happened in Punjab where the Akalis swept to power in the Assembly elections while he was Prime Minister.” He, however, said that both his party and the Congress were made for each other.
