Congress activists clash at meeting

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Differences among activists of the Congress party in Ibrahimpatnam Assembly segment came to fore on Wednesday when two groups attacked one another after they met at local Sai Function Hall.

Ten activists of both the groups sustained minor injuries in the clash that prompted police to resort to lathi charge.

Cases and counter cases were registered against the two groups following complaints lodged by Vishnuvardhan Reddy and Gurunatha Reddy, leaders of the two groups.

Differences had been brewing among the Congress leaders since the name of Mal Reddy Ranga Reddy, sitting Congress MLA from Malakpet, cropped up for the candidature from Ibrahimpatnam. Four days ago, P.C. Shekhar Goud and Laxmipati Goud, who were aspiring to secure party ticket from Ibrahimpatnam, held a meeting with their supporters opposing Ranga Reddy’s candidature from Ibrahimpatnam.

However, Mr. Reddy’s name was announced by the party high command and the first meeting to work out campaign strategy was convened at the function hall. As the meeting began around noon, P.C. Shekhar Goud, Laxmipati Goud, Vishnu Vardhan Reddy and their supporters picked up an argument with Ranga Reddy and others alleging that many important leaders from the constituency were not invited for the meeting.

Tempers ran high as supporters of both the groups entered into serious arguments. Some irate workers started hurling the plastic chairs and damaged the furniture in the hall.

Police initially tried to pacify them but started caning them as situation went out of control. Cases were registered under sections 324 (assault) and 447 (criminal trespass) of Indian Penal Code.
