Azharuddin to bat for Congress in Moradabad

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday announced candidates for 14 more constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of seats it is contesting there to 53. Prominent in the list is cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin, who will be fielded in Moradabad.

The uncertainty over Sultanpur has ended with the party confirming the candidature of Sanjay Singh.

Though his name was cleared by the central election committee ahead of the announcement of the first list on March 4, Mr. Singh’s candidature was held back by Congress president Sonia Gandhi herself.

Also in the third list are three recent entrants to the party: Ramesh Dube in Mirzapur, Dharamraj Patel in Phulpur and Suryamani Tripathi in Bhadohi. Mr. Dube and Mr. Tripathi left the Bahujan Samaj Party earlier this week. Mr. Dube represented Mirzapur in the 14th Lok Sabha.

Others in the fray are Prabhu Dayal Katheria (Agra), Om Prakash Rawat (Misrikh), Ramadeen Ahirwar (Jalaun), Sidh Gopal Sahu (Hamirpur), Bhagwandin Garg (Banda), Ram Nihore Rakesh (Kaushambi), Lal Chand Nishad (Gorakhpur), Raj Bahadur (Machhlishahr) and Ramadhar Joseph (Robertsganj).
