Will K. Prabhakar be ninth time lucky?

K.M. Dayashankar

Astrologers told him that his lucky number was ‘9’ and he would win the elections at the ninth attempt. Ever since Kandem Prabhakar has been filing nominations for every election — from that of ward member of the grama panchayat to that for the Lok Sabha The native of Velgonda village of Dharmapuri mandal started trying his luck in the elections in 2006. His first nomination papers were for the MPTC (Mandal parishad territorial constituency) member electi on. He followed it up by filing nominations for the village ward member and grama sarpanch elections. But to no avail; he bit the dust in all of them.

But, Mr. Prabhakar, a small-time businessman, did not lose heart over these defeats. He went ahead and filed his nomination papers as an Independent candidate for the Karimnagar parliamentary constituency in the by-elections in 2006 and 2008, polling 5,202 and 13,745 votes respectively.

In this election, he has filed nomination papers from the Karimnagar and Nizamabad parliamentary constituencies separately, his seventh attempt to win an election. In doing so, he as set a record of sorts: he is the only candidate from Karimnagar district to file nomination papers from two different parliament constituencies.

Mr. Prabhakar has spent quite a large sum of money filing nominations and canvassing. He lost his deposit in the Lok Sabha elections he earlier contested. But he is not deterred. “The victory in elections will come at my ninth attempt,” he says confidently.
