NHRC notice to MCD chief
J. Balaji
NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner seeking a factual report, within four weeks, on media reports that corporal punishment was meted out to students in an MCD primary school at New Ashok Nagar in the Capital.
The Commission, which suo motu took cognizance of the reports, felt that the serious issue of violation of human rights of the children was involved if the media reports were true. The reports alleged that 11 students of Class III were beaten up by their teacher Rajpal Sharma with a bamboo stick which had protruding nails. The children had to be taken to hospital. They were later discharged. The police had registered a criminal case. They said the students were now reluctant to go to the school.
