‘Price crash for oil palm a temporary phase’

Staff Reporter

TADIKALAPUDI (WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT): K.J. Prabhakara Rao, Divisional Officer, Andhra Pradesh Oilfed, on Saturday appealed to the growers not to uproot their oil palm plantations for want of remunerative prices for their produce. He was speaking at a meeting held in connection with the retirement of National Agricultural Bank for Rural Development (NABARD) Assistant General Manager G. Veeraprasad from service. The price crash was only a `temporary phase’ and that the growers would get a better deal for their produce. It would happen with the possible reimposition of customos duty on edible oil imports by the government soon after the elections, Mr. Rao said. He asserted that palm oil would still have a bright future in the country in view of the increasing demand-supply gap. The inaequate production of palm oil left the country with a huge deficity of oil production which was expected to increase manifold by 2020, he explained.

S.T.G. Satyagovind, Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry department, regretted over poor intake of students into the Veterinary sciences leading to deprival of extension services to the villagers relating to livestock. Only two persons from the district had become Veterinary doctors in the last 10 years, he added. Mr. Veeraprasad highlighted the need to protect the Farmers Clubs floated by the district administration from politics. Whenever the State witnessed a change of government, it would have an adverse impact on the health of the clubs, he commented. Ravi Prakash, Assistant Director, Horticulture department, spoke.
