A break from academics for them

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Studying a professional course is not always fun. Especially so, when the employment scene, hit by the economic downturn, appears far from promising.

“Pragathi ’09,” the two-day Southern Region Inter-Chapter Students’ Fest that started here on Saturday, was timed for the very reason that it offered students of cost accounting an opportunity to relax and unwind away from the hardships of academics and the apprehensions surrounding the slowdown. Sebastian Paul, MP, inaugurated the fest.

The fest organised by the Cochin Chapter of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) is being held at Renewal Centre, Kaloor, here. The Hindu is the media partner for the event.

Students and members from the ICWAI chapters in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Thrissur, Muvattupuzha and Aluva are participating.

Reeta, a cost accounting student from the Coimbatore chapter, found the festival very innovative and a refreshing change from the daily rigours of studies. “It could not have come at a better time providing relief from the apprehensions regarding job prospects in the wake of recession.” She, however, said that chartered accountants and cost accountants would never cease to be in demand since managing accounts was one thing no businessman or professional could afford to do away with, no matter how intense the financial crisis is.

Ms. Reeta, who joined the ICWAI course recently after completing MBA, said the fest facilitated “learning through fun”. She said that anyone could learn the intricate marketing theories if presented in the form of games as were done in the fete.

An inter-college quiz competition will be held on Sunday.
