Idol stolen from Adi Sankara temple

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The half-foot tall idol of Sivalinga, made in green stone believed to be emerald, has been stolen from the sanctum sanctorum of Adi Sankara Janmabhoomi temple at Kalady near here during late hours of Friday.

The burglary was spotted when the priest came for pooja at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday and found the door to the sanctum sanctorum broken open. The idol was brought from Sringeri Matt in 1910.

Some silver utensils used in the temple were also found stolen and the collection box at the tomb of Saradamba, mother of Adi Sankara, was burgled.
