Dalit families attacked in Kalkeri, 7 arrested

KALKERI (KRISHNAGIRI): Trouble erupted again in Kalkeri, the village where police and revenue officials broke open the doors of the Anjaneya temple on January 1 and escorted Dalits to the Karakamma temple for offering prayer.

On a complaint from Lokesh (25) that his house had been attacked, Denkanikottai DSP Sridhar and Hosur DSP V.R. Soundararajan went to the village along with the Denkanikottai Tahsildhar Anex Lila and arrested seven youths including a woman.

Those held were Ramesh, Anand, Ranganath, Venkatesh, Narayanan, Muniappa and Jothy. Police are on the lookout for seven other youths. Lokesh and Raman who were injured in the attack were admitted to the Denkanikottai Government Hospital. Two-wheelers of Lokesh were damaged in the attack.

Police have registered cases against 50 people.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is planning hold a demonstration in the village to safeguard the rights of the Dalits on March 30, party sources here said.
