DUBAI: For the first time in 30 years, Iranian and NATO officials have met for informal talks ahead of the month-end conference on Afghanistan in The Hague. Martin Erdmann, a senior NATO official, said he had met Iran’s Ambassador to the European Union Ali-Asghar Khaji more than two weeks ago. “This is another good step in engaging Iran in the international community,” said Mr. Erdmann. NATO spokesman James Appathurai said the talks had focused on Afghanistan. Iran has activated its Afghan diplomacy, by first participating in a conference on Afghanistan in Moscow and then agreeing to attend the meeting in The Hague. Meanwhile, the head of Iran’s National Security Council Saeed Jalili arrived on Saturday in New Delhi and held talks with the National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan. Mr. Jalili said that both countries needed to hold regular consultations over significant regional and international developments.
