Faith reinforced

The Gujarat High Court’s cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Mayaben Kodnani — Minister of State for Women’s Welfare and an accused in the Naroda massacre in 2002 — by the Ahmedabad Sessions Court reinforces our faith in the higher judiciary. That a Minister in the Narendra Modi government has been accused of inciting and leading a violent mob against the minorities in a major incident of carnage during the post-Godhra riots as a ruling party MLA is a clear indictment of his overt and covert complicity in the pogrom.

Ms Kodnani, who resigned after she was denied bail by the Gujarat High Court, is the first high-profile casualty in the Gujarat riots case. It is seven years since the large-scale massacre of Muslims took place in the State. Many had lost the hope that those responsible for perpetrating them, many of whom continue to cling to power, would ever be brought to book. Ms Kodnani was among those leaders who were alleged to have openly participated in the killings of Muslims in Naroda Patiya, the place of one of the worst massacres. Despite eyewitness accounts, she would have still been roaming free but for the Supreme Court, which appointed the Special Investigation Team to reinvestigate some major cases, including the Naroda-Patiya and Naroda Gaam incidents. At last, the victims of the riots feel their efforts to seek justice did not go futile.

It is astonishing to find the BJP praising Ms Kodnani’s resignation and calling her law abiding. That a woman, a gynaecologist by training, accused of instigating attacks against Muslims during the riots, could hold the post of Minister for Women’s Welfare for seven years after the attack is unbelievable.
