Measures initiated to ensure trouble-free polling

Lorry illegally transporting liquor seized

SHIMOGA: Shimoga district police have initiated measures to ensure fair and trouble-free polling in naxal-affected areas.

Giving details about the security measures being taken up in the naxal-affected areas of the district, Superintendent of Police S. Murugan told presspersons here on Sunday that posters with photos of “naxalites” operating in the region would be displayed at public places in such areas in Tirthahalli taluk. Cash rewards would be given to those who give information regarding whereabouts of naxalites. He said that the identity of informants would be kept secret.

Mr. Murugan said that strict vigil would be maintained in the 23 naxalite-prone villages in the taluk till April 30, the day of polling.

Apart from continuing combing operation in the naxal-affected areas, measures such as providing security to people who face threat from naxalites, collecting information about naxalite activities and intensifying police patrolling to instil confidence among people would be taken up. Mr. Murugan said that personnel from the Central Paramilitary Force, Karnataka State Reserve Police, Anti-naxal Force, District Armed Reserve and civil police would be deployed to ensure free and fair polling in naxal-affected areas.

The police seized a lorry illegally transporting liquor worth Rs. 12 lakh at a village near Konandur in Tirthahalli taluk on Saturday night. The lorry, valued at Rs. 30 lakh, had registration number of Rajasthan, he said.
