Training for self-help groups

MAYILADUTURAI: There is a good scope for the women self help groups (SHGs) to get more income by starting activities like apiculture, mushroom cultivation, vermiculture and small dairy units in the district, said S. Suriyakala, Project Officer, Magalir Thittam, on Saturday.
She said this while inaugurating a training programme for the women SHGs on apiculture, mushroom cultivation, etc., organised jointly by the A.V.C. College and the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology here.
M. Varadharajan, Reader in Zoology, A.V.C. College, gave training to the members of SHGs on honey bee rearing, honey extraction and storage.
R. Saravanamuthu, coordinator of the programme and Reader in Botany of the college, demonstrated the method of mushroom cultivation.
S. Balamurugan, lecturer of the college, said that organic manures were good for the soil health and crops. Vermicompost is one of such manures, which could be prepared using earthworms and plant litter and other organic wastes. P.N. Rethinekumar, Chairman of A.V.C. Institutions, presided..
