TDP not averse to ‘friendly contests’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: With the Grand Alliance partners refusing to budge an inch on four or five problem seats and marathon discussions not yielding any breakthrough, Telugu Desam on Sunday appeared not averse to the idea of having friendly contests in these constituencies.

Sources in Telugu Desam Party, which is heading the alliance said if the issue continues to be unresolved by Monday afternoon, it would settle for such contests but it is keen that these should not exceed five. The argument put forward is when there could be as many as 16 in 2004 Assembly elections among Congress and its allies then, TRS and Left parties, why not five now. At the same time, the TDP leadership wants to leave no stone unturned in avoiding these contests but was prepared for the worst scenario. This was better than continuously trying to convince and cajole the partners to fall in line when they look intractable.
