Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Federation has asked the District Collector to consider an increase in the procurement price of cow/buffalo milk by Rs. 4. S.R. Rajagopal, vice-chairman of the Federation, in a memorandum, said that the cost of cattle feed and price of cows have gone up. Since the procurement price offered by Milk Producers Union is not lucrative, some of the milk producers are selling milk to private dairy owners who offer higher prices. Such a trend would result in Aavin getting lesser milk. Mr. Rajagopal said that procurement price should be increased by Rs. 4 a litre. He added that as far as Coimbatore district was concerned, surplus funds are available with the Union to a tune of Rs. 10 crore for the accounting year 2008-09. As it was done last year, the 50 paise deducted from the milk money be refunded to the farmers. Mr. Rajagopal demanded 100 per cent subsidy for cattle feed and medical expenses for cows/buffaloes reared by members of cooperative milk societies. The union could also consider manufacture of quality cattle feed or supply them at a subsidised rate. Mr. Rajagopal said that the nearly 2,000 workers in cooperative milk societies coming under the lowest consolidated payscale be made permanent employees and provided with time scale pay. Similarly, the workers could be provided with 50 paise a litre as incentive. Chief Minister should take measures to conduct elections to cooperative milk societies, he said.
