Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s accusation that the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) have a “tacit understanding” in some constituencies is in “continuation of the BJP’s faith in anti-campaigning rather than campaigning”, said senior JD(S) leader C. Narayanaswamy.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Karnataka Jatyateeta Vedike here on Monday, he said that the words of the Chief Minister “need not be taken seriously” considering that he had only recently broken his “solemn promise” that he would not allow his son to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

“Mr. Yeddyurappa is anxious because his political fortunes hinge on the results in Shimoga constituency from where his son is contesting. BJP workers in Shimoga are themselves opposed to him,” said Mr. Narayanaswamy.

Speaking about the Bangalore Rural constituency where former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is pitted against Tejaswini Gowda of the Congress, he claimed that the former is a “sure winner”. Though she beat JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda in the last elections from Kanakapura constituency, the circumstances were different then, he said. Mr. Gowda had contested from both Hassan and Kanakapura and people were “misinformed” that he would resign from the latter seat if he won, said Mr. Narayanaswamy.

He said the newly-formed vedike would fight for the Constitutional rights of all people cutting across religious and caste barriers. It had units in 20 districts, he added.
