Car fatally knocks two-wheeler rider into pit

ILL-FATED: The car involved in the accident being taken out of the pit on Taluk Office Road, Saidapet, on Sunday.
CHENNAI: A motorist died after he was knocked down from his two-wheeler by a speeding car on Taluk Office Road, Saidapet, on Sunday. He fell into a huge pit and died on the spot. The car also plunged into the pit. Police suspect that the car driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Police identified the victim as Raja (27) of Pallavaram, working as a team leader in a BPO of a car manufacturer in the city. The accident occurred at 3.50 p.m. when he was returning home from Saidapet with his wife Geethanjali (25) and son Eswar (1).
Police said the car was driven by Srinath (37), a graphic designer residing in Pallavanthangal. He hit the two-wheeler while attempting to avoid colliding with another car, driven by Karthik. Raja fell into the pit on the side of the road that was dug by the Horticulture Department for maintenance work. The car also fell into the pit, the police said. Geethanjali and Eswar were thrown off the bike in the impact.
They suffered minor injuries and were sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment. Srinath suffered minor injures and was taken to Government General Hospital. He has been arrested.
