DA hike no code violation: CEO

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The enhancement of dearness allowance to the State government staff by 9.4 per cent with effect from January 1, 2009, does not constitute violation of the code of conduct for the elections, the Election Commission has said.

Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao clarified here on Monday that hike in DA and salaries to employees were normal benefits. Only fresh benefits, if any, would be treated as violation of the code.

He reiterated that there was no bar if normal benefits under on-going schemes of Indiramma Pathakam and Rajiv Arogyasri were extended to the poor. The restriction pertained only to issuing fresh white cards.

Clean chit

He gave a clean chit to some skits telecast by the Sakshi television channel as they were not advertisements but regular programmes. Parties opposing these programmes must cite the provisions of the Cable & TV Networks Act while lodging the complaint for the EC to take action, he said.
