BJP seeks withdrawal of Varun cases

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the criminal cases and the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on Varun Gandhi be withdrawn and strict action taken against the police and administrative officials responsible for the “barbaric” lathi-charge and police firing in Pilibhit on March 28.

In a memorandum submitted to the Uttar Pradesh Governor, T.V. Rajeswar, on Monday, a BJP delegation led by State unit president Ramapati Ram Tripathi demanded that adequate steps be taken to ensure free and fair elections in Pilibhit.

The memorandum accused the Bahujan Samaj Party government of appeasement politics and said invoking the provisions of NSA amounted to denying a candidate his democratic right to canvas in the elections.

The decision to book Mr. Gandhi under NSA was described as an undemocratic step by the BJP.

The party said the four FIRs lodged against Mr. Gandhi on March 28 were fake and alleged that the BSP government had been taken for a ride by the administrative and police officials. The memorandum raised a query: when intelligence inputs gathered by the district administration pointed to the gathering of a huge crowd why no measures were taken to prevent any untoward incident?

Accusing the Government of an unprovoked lathi-charge on the workers and supporters of the party, the BJP said the incident was the fallout of appeasement politics being played by the present regime.

The delegation included party vice-president Hridaya Narain Dixit and MLAs, Suresh Tiwari, Suresh Srivastava.
