‘Governance is not like acting’

HYDERABAD: Sharpening his attack against the opposition parties during his election campaign on Monday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy took on Praja Rajyam’s Chiranjeevi and remarked that providing good governance was not as easy as “acting in a two-and-a-half hour movie” or “dancing to a couple of songs”.

“Chiranjeevi has entered the electoral fray claiming to provide efficient administration but he neither has the experience nor proper understanding of the issues,” he said and added for good measure: “You have to have a heart to respond and react to people’s problems.”

Dr. Reddy charged the PR president with having earned “crores of rupees” in the movie industry but doing little to come forward and help the people. “Did he ever do anything for the people during natural calamities like floods or cyclones?” he sought to know.

The star Congress campaigner was addressing a public meeting at the Kukatpally Housing Board Colony grounds where he campaigned for his party’s Kukatpally Assembly segment contesting candidate V. Narsing Rao and Malkajgiri Parliament seat aspirant Survey Satyanarayana. The Chief Minister further charged Mr. Chiranjeevi with being against ‘Rajiv Arogyasri’ and ‘Jalayagnam’. “For him building irrigation projects are not necessary. He thinks Nagarjunasagar and Sriramsagar projects are sufficient for the State. Do not trust the ‘Mega’ kutami,” he urged people.

Hits out at Naidu

He also did not spare his bete noire and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu. “He not only backstabbed his father-in-law but also sabotaged N.T. Rama Rao’s pet scheme of subsidised rice. We took up remedial measures when we came to power,” he remarked. Mr. Naidu was charged with closing down and privatising several government units and getting ready to sell APSRTC and Singareni Collieries. If there was no Congress government there would be no subsidised rice, no fee reimbursement for students, health insurance or sops to government staff, he warned. “Please remember our government did not hike power tariff, RTC fares or even gas cylinder price even when the international crude oil prices soared. We always took care not to burden you whenever prices increased,” he said. During his fourth day of campaign in city, Dr. Reddy also canvassed in Miyapur, Malkajgiri and Uppal later in the night.
