Flurry of activity on last day

Nearly 250 candidates file nomination papers



TDP nominee for Vizag (east) V. Ramakrishnababu

VISAKHAPATNAM: Nearly 250 candidates filed their nominations for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly seats in the district on Monday, the last day for filing papers.

Some were political parties’ official candidates, their dummies and rebels, while others filed their nominations both as independents and as candidates of one or the other party. Some candidates, who have filed their nominations during the last few days submitted their nominations again on Monday as a measure of precaution.

Candidates, who have received confirmation of their candidature from their respective political parties, like Praja Rajyam also filed their nominations on the last day and the unsuccessful ticket aspirants too did the same. Among the important candidates who filed their nominations were Daggubati Purandeswari (Congress) and Allu Aravind (Praja Rajyam) for Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle Parliamentary constituencies respectively.

Palla Srinivasa Rao (PR), IM Ahmed (BSP) D. Venkata Ramana (MRPS) were among the 11 who filed their nominations for the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat.

For Anakapalle LS seat, Praja Rajyam leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao too filed his nomination. He had already filed his nomination for Anakapalle Assembly seat.

Lake Raja Rao, BSP’s Paderu MLA, filed nomination papers again for the Araku Lok Sabha and Paderu Assembly constituencies.

Lone candidate

Bheemunipatnam MLA Karri Seetharamu and other Congress leaders who were irked by the party nominating P. Umarani for the Assembly seat, filed nominations as the party candidates and independents. Praja Rajyam announcing its candidates on the final day saw rebels like Korada Raja Babu filing their nominations.

CPI (M)’s Ch. Narasinga Rao, who is the only candidate of the party in the district, Ch. Venkataramayya of PR filed their nominations for Gajuwaka constituency. Telugu Desam’s official candidates V. Ramakrishna Babu (Visakha East) and Bharanikana Jaya (Visakha North) organised good rallies before they submitted their nomination papers. V. Ganesh Kumar (PR), Challa Mahalakshmi (BJP) were among those who filed their nominations for Visakha South Assembly seat.

PR’s official candidate E. Sreerama Murthy and rebel Gunuru Yerrinaidu (Chodavaram), TDP candidate Gavireddy Ramunaidu (Madugula), S. Kota MLA K. Ravibabu and PR’s M. Jayavathi (Araku Valley), former Minister M. Balaraju (Paderu), P. Ramesh Babu (Pendurthi), Lalam Bhaskara Rao of TDP and G.V. Nageswara Rao of PR (Elamanchili), G. Dhanaraju of PR and V. Krishna Swarup of Dalit Bahujana Party (Payakaraopeta) were among those who filed their nominations on Monday.

Thota Vijayalakshmi who has been replaced by Gandhi Babji at Pendurthi by the Congress party, filed her nomination for Anakapalle Assembly segment on the final day.

At the end of final day, the number of nominations received in the district was nearly 400.
