Pitching for low-cost IT hub status

CII being roped in to approach parties to spell out their agenda for making Vizag an IT hub

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam IT Association (VITA) – an umbrella organisation of IT entrepreneurs and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) – has launched a joint campaign to promote the city as one among the world’s top 10 low-cost destinations for investment in IT and ITES.

As part of the campaign, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is being involved to approach contesting candidates and political parties to spell out their agenda for making the city an IT hub.

Political support

“There is need for political support. We are already getting a lot of support from the government and we hope the parties and candidates will also include promotion of IT investment in the city in their agenda,” says K. Shyam Kumar, VITA secretary and vice-president (business development), Symbiosys Technologies.

Prospective entrepreneurs and all those who matter are being reached through the fastest mode of communication with details on why the city is billed as investment-friendly with the lowest commuting time to reach IT Special Economic Zone at Rushikonda and other places where a unit could be started from residential colonies. Ample facilities are in place for plug and play investors.

Low FTE cost

A NASSCOM report recently confirmed that Vizag offers the lowest full time employee (FTE) cost among tier-II destinations. While it is $2,333 per month in Bangalore, $2,000 in Pune, it is $1,500 in Vizag for an experienced professional.

Satyam, HSBC, Kennexa, Infotech, IBM Daksh and several other players have already started their operation and Wipro is shortly launching its centre in the city.

VITA, which also wants to provide free pickup and drop from and to the airport to prospective investors for first-hand knowledge, is confident that their initiative will be a big hit. “Vizag has enormous potential to become a top IT destination being a tier-II city with tier-I facilities. Its crime-free status, the lush green valleys and the sun-kissed beaches along with several sight-seeing spots offer the perfect place for pumping in huge funds into IT,” points out M.P. Dubey, STPI Joint Director.
