Staff Reporter

WELL DONE: S.M.Veerappan, Circle Head, Punjab National Bank, honouring a student in Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: Students must explore the possibility of starting business ventures as a viable alternative, SM. Veerappan, Circle Head, Punjab National Bank, said addressing the annual day function of the MAM Polytechnic College, recently.

Explaining the Credit Guarantee Scheme of the Central Government, Mr. Veerappan said it enabled entrepreneurs, who were unable to give guarantee or collateral securities, to obtain loan from banks.

The PNB, he said, was providing loans upto Rs. 1 crore for viable projects. Banks accord special emphasis for micro, small and medium enterprises, he said, adding that loans up to Rs. 20 lakh were being forwarded at prime lending rate of interest at 11.5 per cent.

Referring to the huge requirement for quality teachers in engineering colleges, Mr. Veerappan advised students with academic orientation to aim for lateral entry in engineering courses, and take up post graduation and research before taking up teaching jobs.

Presiding over, S. Sathikh, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, and Chairman, Governing Council, MAM Group of Institutions, felt that there was enormous scope for students to make the most of the existence of about 400 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

The event also marked the sports and cultural day celebrations.

C. Rajagopalan, College Principal and Maluk Mohammed, Syndicate Member, Anna University, Tiruchi, and Principal, MAM College of Engineering, were among the other speakers.
